Malted dream balls?

I had a dream last night, and it was a real Whoppler.

Wait for it.

In the dream, I was talking with friends I worked with back in the day in Lexington, Kentucky.

We’re talking over 20 years ago.

I can only assume that the NCAA tourney earlier this week has brought that time in my life to the forefront of my brain.  But we weren’t talking about the Wildcats. No, we were all upset that we couldn’t find Whooplers in the local stores.

Not Whoopers, which is what I think we meant. Whooplers.

Even while the dream was taking place, I was thinking in the back of my mind…

“Don’t we really mean Whoopers?

But I couldn’t seem to express it.

So I woke up this morning with Whoppers on the brain.  I hope I can find them in the local theatre.  (That’s the only place I ever eat them.)

And I hope my Lexington friend Paul Fast is doing well.  Because I dreamed about him last night.

Going green

Last Saturday night, when college basketball fans like me were knee-deep in the Final Four, a host of Hollywood celebs were collecting more hardware at the Kids’ Choice Awards.

It takes all kinds, I suppose.

Now, this is one of the few awards show I don’t frequent (since I don’t have a kid).  But I do so enjoy perusing photos and video clips from the broadcast because of one wonderful tradition:

SLIME

You know…the green stuff?

Presenters and winners alike are always at risk of being slimed — and they never know when and where it will be coming.  Here we see Chris Colfer, who plays Kurt on Glee, getting a surprise shot in the chin while announcing an award.

And poor Halle Berry wasn’t even safe in the audience.  Some guy poured a bucket ‘o the green stuff over her unsuspecting head.

It’s a good thing she dressed down for the festivities.  Try explaining green goo when you return your just-out-on-loan gown to the designer.

Awkward.

The slime hasn’t changed my viewing plans for next year’s awards…but it does make we wonder:

Wouldn’t tonight’s NCAA Championship Finals be even more fun with a bit of surprise slime for the winners?

There are celebrities…

…and there are Kentucky celebrities.

Josh Hutcherson, who portrays Peeta in the blockbuster film The Hunger Games, hails from Union, Kentucky.  And like all good Kentuckians, Josh is a diehard UK fan.

He’s also a face painter.

He shared this pic last night during his appearance on Conan. And he revealed that co-star Jennifer Lawrence, also a Kentucky native, is a Louisville Cardinal fan.

Really.

Well, I definitely know who I’m backing in The Hunger Games now.

Designers tout the strength of its ‘jewel tones,’ and how this ‘pop of color’ enhances neutrals. As we say in the country…

Whatevs.

I say Olympian Blue is especially hot this week for one reason and one reason only…

State’s rights

If someone asked me to put money on whether or not you’re watching basketball…

I’d take that bet.

March Madness converts even the most casual viewer…and turns real fans rabid.  And while some may attempt to crown the ‘greatest college basketball team’ based on all-time games won (Kentucky) or on games won over the past decade (Duke), I think a different stat is even more impressive:

Four teams in this year’s NCAA tourney — UK, Murray State, Western Kentucky and UL — come from the same state.

And they all ended the season in the Top 20.

 

 

 

 

Now that’s a sports dynasty.

Proud as a…

Can’t help it.  I’m super psyched that Kentucky is the #1 Seed in the NCAA tourney.

And did you know that the state of Kentucky has three other teams in the big dance? Murray State University. Western Kentucky University. And the University of Louisville.

(I’m just faking it for that last one.)

Whatever the tournament may bring, March Madness begins Wednesday…and the pride of the Bluegrass is behind the Cats!

Catty about fashion

The conference tourneys are underway — March Madness has begun!

But this year the upsets aren’t limited to the games.  Seriously…have you seen the uniforms?

The Baylor Bears debuted this florescent-nightmare-of-a-postseason uniform last night in their win over Kansas State in the opening round of the Big 12 Tournament.

The color is foul enough.  (Perhaps they thought they would be playing under a black light at the Sprint Center?)

But if you look closely, the shorts have a tonal tiger stripe.

Umm — for the Baylor Bears?  Am I missing something here?

It’s been that kinda year in fashion for men’s college basketball.  Nike unveiled a line of uniforms that is so edgy — and so alike — you are hard pressed to tell the teams apart on the floor unless you look at their socks.


Perhaps the fashions designers need to take a time out and remember what men’s college basketball uniforms are all about.

College  Team.  Color.

And then just accept that Kentucky will always look best on the ‘cat walk.’

For love of the game

NBA?  We don’t need no stinkin’ NBA.

The UK Wildcats and KU Jayhawks are playing in the Garden!


 
 
 
 
 
 
 
 

The Champions Classic tips off at Madison Square Garden tonight, bringing the best of college basketball — the only basketball that counts IMHO — to the Big Apple.

(Don’t ask if I was able to get a ticket. I wasn’t; I’m bitter.)

The tourney begins with Duke (hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhcckk-ptooo) taking on Michigan State.  Who cares?  It’s the opener.  Whatever.  Take your seats, folks; nothing to see here.

The big game is between my alma mater (and pre-season #2-ranked) University of Kentucky Wildcats and #12-ranked KU.

Suffice it to say the two teams have a history.  Both have beat each other soundly on their home courts.  (You don’t forget that kinda thing.)  I lived in Kansas City when UK won NCAA Championships in 1996 and 1998 and was the runner-up in 1997.

I don’t think my friends have forgotten that, either.

In fact, I have a little wager with my friend Dan on tonight’s game.  Not for money, mind you; we don’t bet cash on our teams.  But believe you me — after the game has been decided, you’ll all be able to tell what we did wager.

May the best team win!
