When I worked at Hallmark Cards, I had the good fortune to work with a lot of very talented writers and artists.
Maura Cluthe was one of ‘em.
She has her own website now — with a shop where you can buy posters, prints, books, buttons and stickers featuring her distinctive artwork.
My favorite?
Her new happy blue button.
Look at that face — gotta love those big, angelic-yet-mischievous eyes.
I wonder if she gives volume discounts?

Today I discovered land art.
It’s a movement that started in the late 60′s and early 70′s by artists using natural materials to create sculptures.
Richard Schilling‘s work below is a perfect example.
He used rowan berries to create this beautiful autumnal gradation of color.

Some people climb mountains. Others run marathons.
And then there are the people who eat emu eggs.
The latest darling of farmers’ markets, emu eggs are, on average, six inches long, weigh two pounds, and are the equivalent of 10-12 chicken eggs.
And cost $20 a piece.
Cock-a-doodle-emu.
Now, emus may be native to Australia, but the growing popularity and high market value of their eggs have made farming them locally a great investment. Farms like Roaming Acres in neighboring New Jersey have over 20 emus on site (and ostriches, too).
And while empty egg shells are sold to artists and some eggs go to commercial kitchens, it’s the home cook looking to impress their friends that are driving the business.

Rob Surette created a portrait of Jesus. It’s 5.5 x 4 feet in size. It took him six months and 24,790 push pins to finish. The price tag for his creation?
$250,000
As we say in the country, good lord. Wanna see it?
You gotta admit, that’s pretty cool. But what’s really surprising is all the push pin artists that are out there. Rob isn’t the only one sticking it to the canvas (and the buyers).

Fun is a’foot
Like roller coasters? Hiking, too?
Then you’ll love Duisburg, Germany.
Magic Mountain is an elevated walking path designed by German artists Heike Mutter and Ulrich Genth. Rising up to 147 feet above the ground, this serious climb mimics a roller coaster…and provides some amazing views for hikers.
And walking in a loop-to-loop? Pretty cool.
Leave it to my German cousins to come up with a way to make roller coasters healthy. What’s next? Subways that are powered by footpower? Buses that we pedal?
