Rory Dog 14The best dog on the planet for 14 straight years…

Happy Birthday, Rory Dog!

Sensory snacks

When I was a kid, my mom made our favorite meals on our birthdays.

Mine was fried chicken, mashed potatoes and lima beans.

I am thinking of this not because it is my birthday, but because I am hungry. I haven’t had dinner. I barely had time for lunch. And now I am trapped en route from Boston to New York.

No cafe car. No food for purchase. Not even a lousy stick of gum. So I am savoring my memories. And they are pretty tasty right now.

Or that’s what I keep telling myself anyway…

In like a wildcat

It’s here. My favorite time of the year.

I love everything about the month of March.

My birthday is in March.  My sister, dad, brother-in-law, cousins, and a few friends also celebrate their birthdays in March.

So there’s lots of cake.

There’s also March Madness, the most wonderful time of the year (especially when your alma mater is currently ranked #1, and two other state schools are in the Top 25).

GO BIG BLUE!

There’s St. Patrick’s Day, the Ides of March, the arrival of spring, Women’s History Month — hey, I am a girl — and bizarre celebrations like Save A Spider Day.

Let’s face it — March rocks!

The only thing about March that I’m not totally in love with is the birthstone.  I have always found the aquamarine a bit washed out and unremarkable.

But I recently learned that the bloodstone is a March birthstone alternative — stunning!

That seals the deal — March is the best month of the year.

Dog with a view

It’s Rory’s birthday!

The greatest dog I’ve ever known turns 12 today.  Happy Birthday, Rory Dog!

I have talked about Rory so much in The Egg that I fear a long ode to him today may be redundant.  So to honor his special day, I have instead shared some pics of him throughout the years.  Now you can see firsthand how my tiny chocolate puppy has became the mocha old man he is today.

Some of you may have seen this photo on Facebook.  This is me and Rory in 1998.  He was six weeks old and so brown, he was almost black.  My hair wasn’t far behind, either.  (And me, a natural redhead — weird how that happens sometimes.)  Rory weighed 1 1/2 pounds and had to wear a cat collar.

By four months, Rory had quadrupled in size and was beginning to lighten a bit, especially around the face.  He has a pig’s ear in his paws in that shot; he loves them to his day (and I still think they’re gross).

By Rory’s first birthday, you could see a hint of the taupe dog hiding inside.  This photo was taken by a professional photographer who I knew at Hallmark. I had plans to do that every five years.  Oops.

As the years have  passed, Rory has just gotten lighter and lighter and lighter.  He now has the kind of color that gets us stopped in the street.  He is already a bit shorter and stouter than your typical cockapoo; his color only adds to his air of mystique.

(Well, as much mystique as a dog can have when he greets everyone on the street by rolling over on his back and showing his pink belly!)

I may have picked Rory from the litter because he was ‘the brown one,’ but I certainly lucked out getting the one who was smart and gentle and loving and funny.

(In a mocha latte taupe kinda way.)

Special thanks to Aunt Lou and Uncle Chuck for help with the dog photos!

Anti-pasta

We’re celebrating a good friend’s birthday tonight.  At an Italian restaurant.  In Boston’s North End.

Again.

I don’t want to say that this particular friend is in a rut, but…

Lei è in una carreggiata!

This would probably bother me a lot less if I enjoyed Italian food a little more.  I’m one of those rare individuals who’s just not into pasta.

It’s just so filling to me; I can only handle a couple of fork fulls, and I’m done.  That’s why I only eat it a few times a year…and I can always count on her birthday being one of ‘em.

Don’t get me wrong — I think it’s great that she knows what she likes.  But can’t she shake it up a little — just once — on her big day?  Celebrate the passing years by trying something new…or just something different?

Luckily tonight, there is a unique distraction.  As I eat Italian food yet again, I will be able to turn my attention away from the dread pasta and toward dessert, ’cause it just so happens to be… National Spumoni Day!!

I can easily get behind ice cream….especially spumoni, with its multiple colors, fruit and candy.  Nary a noodle in sight!  (We should always get together for her birthday a few days early.)

But my friend doesn’t need to know.

It is her big day, after all.

Post its

There are a lot of good arguments to stay off Facebook.

I’ll heard them all.

  1. It’s a time suck.
  2. You re-connect with some people you’d really rather not.
  3. You could get a computer virus.
  4. No one really needs flair.
  5. You could lose your personal information and security.
  6. Did I mention it’s a time suck?

…and all of these reasons are valid, to a certain extent.

But where else but Facebook can you wake up on your birthday and be greeted by dozens of well wishes?

It is sweet and heart warming and fun and, gosh darn it — makes me like Facebook even more!

So, for those of you who avoid Facebook because of the potential negatives it might bring into your life, stop and consider the positives.

It can be a good thing…if you let it.
