A load of hurt

superman

I saw Man of Steel in IMAX 3D tonight — opening night.  A few folks were there with me, to say the least.

And, boy, did we get a show.

This movie is HUGE….and not just because it’s an IMAX print.  I saw Star Trek Into Darkness in IMAX, and everything in Man of Steel seems bigger by a factor of 10.

The musical score, by Hans Zimmer, is like a punch to the solar plexus.  It’s loud and driving (and kinda made my ears hurt, to be honest).

The physical fights and battle scenes are ginormous.  And exhausting.  The bad guys beat the hell out of Superman, but he just keeps on coming back.

Needless to say, it took a lot of CGI to make Man of Steel, and director Zack Snyder uses it to great effect to create a world worthy of our hero.  But the biggest and best part of this movie requires nothing more than a tight closeup to appreciate — Henry Cavill.

In the immortal words of annoying celebrity cook Rachael Ray –

YUM-O.

The special relationship

Is Downton Abbey the one public TV program that will convert viewers into contributors?

PBS sure thinks so.

DA cartoonAnd a lot of folks agree.

But PBS viewers in the U.S. have to wait a full four months after their counterparts in the U.K…which means spoilers, and lots of them.

I assumed the time lag was laid down by the producers.  The Brits would appreciate a slower pace, right?

NO.

Downton Abbey executive producer Gareth Neame wants American audiences in on the first viewing!  In an interview in Vulture, he was quoted as saying, “If I were PBS and I had the biggest drama I’d ever had in my entire 40-year history, I would be sorting my schedules out to make sure I was airing it more quickly.”

So what gives, PBS?

Are you scared to put Downton Abbey head-to-head with other new programming that comes out in the fall?  I would think its strong showing against The Walking Dead this spring would ease your mind on that score.  I know marketing DA might be a bit more challenging — since the actors will be committed on both continents — but a divide-and-conquer approach could be adopted.

Or perhaps the U.S. viewers will continue to vote with their checkbooks…and then the cartoon will look something like this:

What I learned on Facebook today

You know how you see something and think it’s a joke…but then it turns out to be a real thing?

That happened to me today on Facebook.

A good friend posted this cartoon:

flatulence filtering underwear

I like a good fart joke anyday, so I could appreciate the humor. But then I noticed the logo and “Flatulence Filtering Underwear” at bottom right. That’s a joke, too…right?

Not even. It’s real.

The logo belongs to Shreddies, which manufactures flatulence filtering undies for men and women. These specially-made garments contain activated carbon cloth that help filter and eliminate odor.

Shut the french window!

Dirk’s Big Bunny Blog

Some days, ya just gotta tip your hat to the blogosphere…’cause Dirk nailed this one right on the head!

Happy Monday everybody!  May the stuff that spews forth from your brain be as fabulous and fraught with…confusion.

Tragic

I was very sad to learn that Mary Kennedy, wife of Robert Kennedy, Jr., was found dead yesterday at his home in Bedford, New York.

I met them years ago on a plane, and liked them both very both.  So the loss seems very personal.

Below is the blog entry I wrote in 2010 about my Kennedy encounter.

—————

I read today that Bobby Kennedy, Jr. filed for a divorce from his wife Mary. That’s too bad.  They seemed like such a nice couple…

When I met them.

Yeah, you read it right.  I met Bobby and Mary Kennedy.  They sat next to me on a flight from Denver to Aspen.  We were all en route to the 2nd Annual US Comedy Arts Festival. I was on a research trip for Hallmark Cards; Bobby was going to introduce Garry Trudeau, his good friend and creator of the “Doonesbury” comic strip, who was being honored at the festival.

The small jet had no first class; that’s why they were seated next to me.  I recognized them immediately when they boarded just moments before take-off — my mother loved the Kennedys like most Catholics of her generation — but I didn’t let on.

They were very friendly and chatted with me during the short flight.  When they realized I was going to the festival as well, they mentioned their friend Garry — by first name only — and said ‘perhaps they’d see me there.’

It was a great story to share with my co-workers, who were seated elsewhere on the plane.

I attended the Doonesbury retrospective and only made the ‘Kennedy connection’ when Bobby stepped up to the podium to introduce ‘his friend Garry.’  After the event was over, attendees were invited to a gallery next door exhibiting framed “Doonesbury” cartoons.

As I was milling around with my co-workers, I suddenly heard shouts of  “Carla!  Carla!”  There across the room were Mary and Bobby Kennedy, smiling and waving.  Garry Trudeau stood at their side.

The rest of the evening was kind of a rock star moment for me.  I got to hang with the Kennedys for a while.  I met Garry Trudeau, whose comic strips helped Watergate make sense, and I was able to get his autograph for my brother Kent.

And best of all?  The look on my co-workers’ faces.

Priceless.

Day by day

Boomtown Rats

I’ll tell you why I don’t like Mondays.

Everybody wants everything done on Mondays.  I try to do everything on Mondays.  Monday never seems to end.

By Tuesday, I done.

So…how’re you doing?

Wah

Comic Con is in full swing this weekend in San Diego.  And I’m not there….again.  So, I’m bitter.  Again.

I know, I should stop my whining and get my butt out there.  I mean, seriously — even Hallmark Cards has a booth.  And I know them!

But instead, here I am in Boston, spending my entire day making a living.

Or am I?

Perhaps that’s really me behind those dark glasses…sporting a sexier version of Star Wars stormtrooper gear.  (The black inserts are slimming, don’t you agree?)

And any girl will tell you when your best friend has blue hair, the guys are gonna look your way.

(That is a girl…right?)

Or perhaps that’s me in full costume dressed as a…well, as a…cat? With Harry Potter taped glasses, even.

I do have green eyes, and although I’m not a big fan of pink hair on a normal day, I think the green and gold jumpsuit saves it.

A cat superhero?  I can get behind that for a day.

(Just don’t tell my dog.)

Yes, maybe ‘being’ at Comic Con is just a state of mind.  Maybe being a geek is enough.

A geek that whines — goodness knows I’m working that so far.

Dyno-mite!

From time to time, The Sticky Egg not only highlights things that are cool, kitschy or culturally significant…

It points out stuff I simply gots to have!

For instance, in late January, I was inspired by an over-sized representation of a Marvel Comic strip panel that I felt had an important message for women everywhere:

“I simply haven’t met a boy yet who interests me! And until I do, I’d rather walk alone than date just anyone.”

I think I held out a whole week before I ordered that one.

And then earlier this month, I got all excited about the new — well, new to me anyway — iPhone icon pillows being sold by Craftsquatch, a store on Etsy.

I wrote that particular blog entry just a couple of days after my birthday, and mentioned what a wonderful gift they would make.

Well, one of my best friends took the bait, and I am happy to report…

There be iPhone pillows in the house!

Just look at them — it’s like the Marvel canvas and the pillows and my red leather couch were made for each other!

Since you are there for me through the silliness and the surreal, I wanted to celebrate my way cool decor with you as well.

And people say blogs don’t amount to anything…
