Daytimer

I didn’t watch the series 24 starring Kiefer Sutherland.

I know it was great.  Perhaps one day I will.

But right now, I feel like I’m living it…because I can’t go 24 hours without running into Kiefer Sutherland.

He’s the voice of calm on the current Bank of America television campaign. (They need one.)  He’s the spokesperson for Apple Intel, his raspy voice the perfect complement to their space age-y spots.  He’s also the voice of Nissan and Verizon — and that’s just in the United States.

In Canada, his dulcet tones sell Ford Fusion.  In Brazil, it’s Peugeot.

I know he has a new series on television called Touch, and a 24 feature film in the works.  But seriously Kiefer, why bother?

You already RULE THE WORLD.

Duck and cover

Can you quack like a duck?

Then Gilbert Gottfried’s loss may be your gain.

After the comedian’s insensitive tweets about the Japan earthquake and tsunami, Gottfried was dismissed by insurance giant Aflac as the voice of their iconic duck.

The company has said a nationwide search will be held in the near future for a new ‘quacker,’ but no dates have yet been announced.

That hasn’t stopped folks from getting their ducks in a row — sorry, couldn’t resist — and uploading their audition videos on Youtube.  America Online is further encouraging the practice by promising to have a professional voiceover agent review any videos tagged “aol jobs aflac video” and posting their favorites.

Quack me up.

Personally, I think Aflac is going to have to find a pretty perfect match to Gottfried’s distinctive squawk, or the switcheroo will just be a distraction. Everyone is aware of the circumstances and the timing, and folks are going to be listening and comparing and critiquing and no doubt finding fault…

Even if there’s none on the bill.

Lotta nuts

I have often bemoaned the fact that celebrities are taking over the commercial voiceover landscape.  What used to be a lucrative business for John and Jane Doe is now fodder for popular stars of TV and movies.

But sometimes…advertisers just get it right.

Planters is giving Mr. Peanut a makeover.  We’re talking a whole new look.

High-tech 3D rendering. A nifty flannel suit.  And for the first time in almost a century, a voice.

Robert Downey Jr.’s voice.

If you saw Downey in “Sherlock Holmes,” you know why Planters is pursuing this particular bit of typecasting.  Both characters share the same tailor now, its true.  And if Mr. Peanut can embody the same smarts, humor, martial arts skill and sex appeal as Downey did as Holmes, then I’d say Planters has a hit on its hands.

They have already posted the holiday commercial on their Facebook page for fans to enjoy.  If you “Like” Mr. Peanut, you’ll be able to check out Downey’s vocal performance.

Is he as nutty as you had hoped?
