When you think of healthy, shiny, beautiful hair — what’s the first thing that comes to mind?
Did someone say purple kangaroo?
Perhaps a claymation-inspired one…with big doe eyes and hooves that flatten out in a creepy unfinished way?
I didn’t think so.
What does a purple kangaroo puppet have to do with hair anyway?
Nothing. That’s the point.
Aussie Hair Care is a highly recognizable brand. Their stylized kangaroo silhouette over a field of bold purple stands out on the shampoo aisle. And up to now, it has been a symbol of the Australian lifestyle — wild, untamed, carefree.
Now some product manager has decided carefree means cartoon and has turned that elegant symbol into a muppet who would be more at home on Sesame Street.
Sure, fuzzy mascots work for popsicles and Poptarts and even Pop Rocks — but how does this one embody the Aussie Hair Care brand or consumer? Do I really want to buy shampoo and conditioner from a kangaroo puppet with a tacky purple ‘do?
Not even.
Only another kangaroo would fall for that.
