Spoked

I love a theme.  And apparently today’s is of the two-wheeled variety.

Everywhere I look online, I see bicycles.

Not kid’s bikes with training wheels.  Or Saturday enthusiasts zooming by wearing spandex.  Or even coverage of the Tour de France.  No, we’re talking bicycles that are taking a different turn.

Exhibit  B — Bicycle Seat Bench

Exhibit C — Bicycle Wedding Cake

Wow, I’m almost psyched enough to go out and ride!

Nah.

Quack

While doing my morning Twitter check, an avatar caught my eye.

Not only was it someone I don’t usually follow — their post had been re-tweeted — but it was a yellow rubber duckie.

I love rubber duckies.

They’re cute and sunny and silly and playful.  I kinda wished for a second that my avatar was a rubber duckie (instead of of an egg with a crooked grin).

Funny thing — I’ve never owned a rubber duckie.  We all know Ernie on Sesame Street had one; he used to sing to it.  And Queen Elizabeth II was rumored to have one in her bathroom that wore a crown.  (A workman saw it when he was doing some painting and told a tabloid, of course.)

There’s even a Guinness World Record for Largest Rubber Duckie Collection — 2,583 unique rubber ducks, awarded to Charlotte Lee in 2007.

Greedy woman.  She’s got my duck.

Bricks and movies

When we were kids, my sister Lou and I spent a lot of time playing with Legos….not that we ever really built anything.  No mega skyscrapers or castles.  No construction sites or villages with train depots.

We made dogs.

Yep — simple little dogs who lived in small, one-level Lego houses. No roofs. No windows even.  Just your basic foundation with low walls, so the dogs could move from kitchen to living room to bedroom as they went about their daily lives.

Hey, it worked for us.

I was reminded of our little doggie dramas when I happened upon the amazingly detailed movie scenes that artist Alex Eylar created with Legos to celebrate the 2011 Academy Award Best Picture nominees.

These things are brilliant!  Using only Legos, Alex was able to communicate each movie’s storyline and emotional essence.   It’s difficult to select a favorite — they are all amazing in their own way — but I have included three below.

Enjoy the full gallery here.  Then, grab some Legos and build your own drama (or dog house).

Happy New Year from the Egg!

My friend Trish hosts an annual day-long party to kick off the new year.  It usually starts around 1pm — gotta give folks time to sleep off their NYE festivities, after all — and goes until the last person is left standing.

Trish and the crew eat, drink, watch football and play games all day.  It’s a lot of fun.  I would be attending today…except she lives half-way across the country.

So, in an attempt to join in the fun from afar, I will be spending part of my day playing Online Jenga.

That’s right — Jenga has gone digital.  You can play it with however many players you’ve got.  (So one is acceptable, if that’s your situation.  No judgment.)

Give it a try between football games.  You might just find it addictive.

And what better way to start the new year than with a new way to waste your time!
