A mouthful

I am very compromise-oriented.

Just ask my family.

So I appreciate clever companies who create products with compromises built right in.

For example, I don’t do the big Turkey Day dinner; I haven’t for years.  I prefer to spend the day at the Macy’s Parade and the movie theater, munching on popcorn and candy.

And this year’s menu will include Thanksgiving Gumballs!

In turkey, pumpkin pie and cranberry flavors, these candies are a mini-Thanksgiving dinner, which should placate friends and family horrified that I’m skipping the biggest holiday-sanctioned food fest of the year.

Plus, they will help me keep the holiday in mind while I’m viewing The Muppet Movie and The Descendants.  ‘Cause nothing makes a person feel more thankful than…

Turkey balls.

Hot scare

The organizers of the 2011 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade certainly have a bug up their skirts.

They’re not angry; they literally have a bug in the parade lineup.

The new balloon is from the mind of the master of macabre himself, Tim Burton…so he’s no cute critter clutching a flower in his teeth.

The balloon’s name is B. Boy — or B. for short — and, according to Burton, was created from the used balloons leftover from children’s parties at a London hospital.  Patched together and covered with stitches, the design is classic Burton…which makes it definitely not classic Macy’s.

You don’t see the Hello Kitty balloon sporting any fangs on Turkey Day morning.  And while Snoopy’s flying ace getup might pass as a Halloween costume, I don’t think any children are frightened by his goggles or red cape.

But what of B.Boy?  Is his Frankenstein-like face too scary for Thanksgiving morning?

Not with those big, innocent eyes.

Man up, kiddies.  There’s a new bug in town.

Love letter

Some people bemoan the end of summer.  Not me.

I love fall.  I love the early morning chill.  I love how energized Rory is — even as he nears his 11th birthday — when the day is sunny and crisp, and he runs through the park like a puppy.

I love wearing hoodies when I am working from home.  I especially love my “Team Edward” sweatshirt, even though it makes my friends roll their eyes.  Actually, that makes me love it more.

I love my coats, hats and gloves.  I love their colors and textures, and I especially love having pockets again.  So many places to put poop bags and my Palm Pre and keys and money and everything else I need on my dog walks around the ‘hood.

I love New York City in the fall.  The tourist trade thins — although I enjoy tourists as a rule — so the price of Broadway shows goes down, and Central Park becomes, if possible, even more beautiful.

I love the city as it preps for the holidays.  I love being able to watch the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade one block from my apartment.  I love the Rockefeller Center ice rink, the Radio City Christmas Spectacular and the Top O’ the Rock, where I can kinda see my apartment.

And when the weather starts to warm, I’ll love New York City in the spring, too.

But right now, I’d just love to spend some time there.
