Today is Father’s Day — Happy Father’s Day, everybody! — and like a lot of holidays and special occasions, Google has created a logo dedicated to all the dads out there:
Wow. Went all out, didn’t they?
I mean, on Les Paul’s birthday, they designed a Google logo that was a functioning guitar you could actually strum. And I recall a PacMan version of the Google homepage that you could play using your arrow buttons.
What does Dad get on his special day? A tie. A tie that just…hangs there. Doesn’t even swing from side to side when you click on it. (Would have been a nice touch, don’t you think?)
As usual, Dad gets remembered but not really fussed over. And he won’t mind. Won’t say anything. Because he doesn’t really expect much…especially not from the Google homepage.
Would have been nice, though. Goodness knows he deserves it.

Lessons learned
What a difference a year makes.
Just ask Google.
Father’s Day 2011
Last year I spanked them for the Father’s Day tribute on their homepage. Sure, they remembered Dad, but the gesture was minimal, stereotypical and lacked animation — a sad effort compared to their extravagant nods to Les Paul and PacMan.
Dad deserves better.
Google Fathers Day 2012
And this year, Google delivered. Their team has developed not only an animated tribute, but a charming story with heart and sweetness worthy of the man of the hour.
Nice work, Google. I knew you had it in you. It just took a little tough love to get the job done right.
Rather fitting on Father’s Day, don’t you think?
