Happy Seventh Birthday, Sticky Egg!
A lot has changed since I started this blog on a whim after watching the movie Julie and Julia.
New job. New city. New adventures, this time on my own.
Will this really be lucky seven? I guess we’ll have to wait and see. Thanks for hanging around with me to find out!

I started following @SteveJobQuotes on Twitter when the account appeared following his untimely death.
The account was exactly that — inspirational quotes from Jobs taken from his live talks or book.
It was food for thought.
But lately the tweets have taken a turn. Only today, “The best ways to flirt” and “Deadly fashion sins” were on their newsfeed.
I can’t picture Jobs having much to say on either topic, except perhaps —
“A black turtleneck is always right.”

Does tennis great John McEnroe have a history of histrionics?
Absolutely.
But I take issue with media outlets like Page Six calling his recent comments about New York City cyclists a ‘rant.’
My neighbor was simply speaking the truth.
McEnroe was speaking with ABC correspondent Lynn Sherr at a Central Park Conservancy Women’s Committee luncheon when he made the remarks, citing his experience as a cyclist himself.
I didn’t attend the luncheon, but his remarks in the article give an accurate account of the majority of cyclists’ behavior in Central Park. They travel at dangerous speeds, don’t break for pedestrians, and have caused numerous injuries and even a few deaths.
I personally appreciate someone of McEnroe’s stature bringing attention to this situation.
Remember when we had unbiased media who filed the stories?

Back in late August, I shared the happy news that my Upper West Side neighborhood is getting a local bookshop — indeed, the Shoppe Around the Corner that inspired You’ve Got Mail is returning to the hood.
Apparently the owners wanted to get a feel for the locals’ reaction to their announcement. So they used an old-school method — post-it notes — to recreate comments aka Facebook on the storefront window:
I’d say it’s pretty positive.

I don’t watch Game of Thrones.
I know — it’s laughable.
But I do read all the spoiler-filled columns about each episode on Sunday night, written by faithful journalist-viewers who continue to be ‘shocked’ by the weekly carnage.
How many times can main characters be murdered — in new and albeit creative ways — before it becomes expected instead of shocking? I mean, I don’t watch the show and I look forward to hearing how many people are skewered this week and how they did it.
If you are still shocked at this point, GoT fans, then don’t get out of bed.
Your living room, the city streets, and definitely your place of employment are filled with random horrors that you are not man and/or woman enough to face.

To inspire today’s post, I scrolled through previous images I have used in the blog and selected one at random —
Uh oh.
Not sure this one is going to do the job…especially on a national holiday. Kinda feel the couch calling instead.
But wait — I have a laptop. I can write on the couch. I’ll write my blog post there. No worries. No problems.
Uh oh.
The TV is in front of the couch…and Silver Linings Playbook is on Showtime. That might get in the way of my writing.
Not so far.

Writing a daily blog isn’t always easy.
Sometimes there’s not enough time in the day. Often there’s loads of time, but no ideas rolling around inside my head.
Today was the latter.
But just when my thoughts were beginning to jell, movie critic Richard Roeper posted this photo to his Twitter feed:
I had such a sugar rush, I might as well have really eaten them.
They are from Do Rite Donuts in Chicago. Guess where I’m headed next time I blow into town?

IMHO
I have no business writing this blog post.
I haven’t watched Grey’s Anatomy since…well, I don’t know when, so that pretty much discredits my quality of knowledge or opinion. But I have to say two things:
Derek Shepherd deserved a much better send-off.
To die from injuries sustained in a car crash immediately after saving a bunch of people who were injured in a separate car crash? Did Shonda Rhimes run out of ideas? Or did she feel like that scenario was fraught with irony?
I vote for the former.
Unless Patrick Dempsey, who loves racing, demanded death by car, it just seems lazy to me.
And what’s with Rhimes’ habit of having her female characters off their men by pulling the plug?
Izzy did it. Now Meredith. Is this supposed to come across as a show of strength? A “I love them, but I can take them out when it’s time to let them go” kinda vibe?
I’m sure most people, when faced with a similar situation — in medical professions or not — would do the same thing. And it seems a little redundant on a scripted series like this.
Derek deserved his own unique death. Derek deserved better.
