Peanuts

HAPPY 64TH ANNIVERSARY, PEANUTS!

(We sure miss ya, Sparky.)

Good grief

My sister and I came across these pumpkins for sell in the Chelsea Market here in New York City:

great pumpkin

We were both blown away by the price, especially for ‘great pumpkins’ that clearly ranged in size and weight.  (I’m pretty sure Linus would bemoan the blatant consumerism as well.)

How much would giant pumpkins go for in your neck of the woods?

Catty, or not

Unless you have been avoiding social media, you have no doubt heard the shocking revelation from Sanrio that Hello Kitty is, in fact not a kitty:

“Hello Kitty is not a cat. She’s a cartoon character. She is a little girl. She is a friend. But she is not a cat. She’s never depicted on all fours. She walks and sits like a two-legged creature. She does have a pet cat of her own, however, and it’s called Charmmy Kitty.”

hello kittyNow, I could point out the obvious flaws in their argument — six of them to be precise — those very un-little-girl-like whiskers that stick out of Hello Kitty’s face.

How many little girl characters sport whiskers?  If they have a hormonal imbalance, maybe…but that’s not the stuff of your typical cutesy cartoon world.

But instead, let’s focus on the bigger question —

WHY?

Why pick now to drop this bomb?  It has been 40 years since this very pink, very catty property was introduced — why pick now to draw this line in the litter box?

If this distinction mattered that much to Sanrio and to its legion of crazy cat lasses and ladies, they should have made it abundantly clear four decades ago.

Meow.

Wow. Crack me up.

Living (or dying) a double life

Archie is dead.

life with archie 36Or he will be when Issue #36 of “Life with Archie” hits stores in July.

That’s the word from CNN and Archie Comics CEO Jon Goldwater, the son of the comics’ creator.

Apparently Archie, always the nice guy at Riverdale High, dies saving a friend.

Now, I read a lot of Archie Comics as a kid…so I was super sad when I first read the news.  Then I found out that the “Life with Archie” series has been telling stories about Archie’s possible ‘future lives’ and ends, appropriately enough, with his death.  The regular Archie Comics set in his teenage years at Riverdale will continue on.

Umm…that seems like a bit of a cheat.  Or maybe a stunt to get some readers like me back who don’t know the difference?

Archie — say it isn’t so.

Oh wait, you’re dead.  Well, one version of you is dead…or will be soon.  I’m so confused.

Tie it up with a bow

I have been an AMC Stubs member for three years.

During that time, I have spent $24 in membership fees. (The first year was free.) For that price, I have saved $274 on tickets, concessions and ticketing fees.

So yeah, it’s kinda worth it.

But look at what else AMC is going to give me — Carla, AMC Stubs member — when I go to see Mr. Peabody & Sherman in 3D!

An authentic bow tie and glasses!

I know this is intended to appeal to the kids in the audience, but clearly I have never grown up.

Quite a character
