Welcome home

My mother’s china has been packed in a box for 27 years.

I have taken it with me from city to city, to nine different homes, but have never had the cabinet space to display it.

Well, today it sees the light!

Isn’t it beautiful?

After all those moves, I unwrapped each piece with some trepidation, but only one was broken.

It somehow seems fitting.

New year, redo

Our office did a bit of rearranging this afternoon.

image

Thanks to technology, all I had to move was some files, my purse and my laptop computer. Everything else could be networked to my new desk.

I couldn’t help but compare it to reorganizations I have lived through in the past. They took much more manpower and many more hours to complete. Also, they were more mentally stressful; in today’s move, I changed locations by a factor five feet or so.

I think I can deal.

Color me skeptical

Pantone, the leading authority on color and color trends, just announced the Color of the Year for 2016.

There are two: Rose Quartz and Serenity.

Pantone says these shades reflect society’s ‘search for peace and tranquility.’

I think someone on the selection committee is having a baby.

Holiday glitz

An instagram account has got me thinking about holiday decorating.

The Gay Beards are all about men’s grooming…specifically,  really creative ways to fancy up facial hair.

But their glitter beards?

image

They just make me want to decorate a Christmas tree completely covered in glitter.

Their tutorial video suggests using beard oil to make the glitter stick.

Hmmm…tree sap,  maybe?

Let it snow

The holiday decorations in my neighborhood have been hung.

I love ’em.

They remind me of the fussy versions from my childhood,  but are cleaner and simpler in design.

I hope they aren’t predictors of lots of snow this winter.  Cause I would like them a whole lot less.

Deja vu

This couch is sitting in the trash outside my building.

image

It looks just like the couch I bought for my very first apartment way back in…well, no need getting distracted by dates.

One thing is for sure — it’s timeless.

Ugly then, ugly now.

Don’t sit down

During the month of October, we see a lot of scary things on TV, in movies, on ads in every walk of life — all because Halloween is coming.

But with the exception of The Town that Dreaded Sundown, I don’t think I have seen anything as scary as the couch at this hotel.

image

Actually, the photo makes it look kinda vintage. It’s not.

It’s a HORROR.

Friendly skies

Believe it or not,  this is a gate at Boston Logan Airport.

Isn’t it festive?

Apparently a lot of cruises depart from this gate, and the airlines decided to have some fun with the decor.

How human of them. How thoughtful. How fun for the kids who are accompanying their parents on the trip.

I think other airports and other airlines should follow suit. More than one person has stopped to look and take a picture.  It has put a smile on their faces too.

And smiles can be hard to come by during a long day of travel.

Desert view

These cacti — the print, to be more accurate — are hanging in my hotel room in San Antonio.

I find them oddly comforting.

They are quiet without being lonely, and the sunset colors suggest coolness instead of heat.

I wonder if they would notice if I took it?

Room with a point of view

I have traveled to Chicago a lot over the years, and have stayed in what seems like every hotel, but tonight I discovered something new —

image

The Acme Hotel.

It’s not inspired by the coyote and roadrunner (like I first thought).  Instead, the owners are attempting an industrial look and feel — so said the marketing guy.

The rooms definitely have a bit of whimsy. And every inch of space is efficiently used.

I can’t remember the last time I took pictures of a hotel room because it was pretty.  Or cool.  Or anything, for that matter.

Go Acme!
