Parenthood

Got a book recommendation for you.

It was an impulse buy in an airport bookstore.  But Amazon.com recommended it to me a few weeks later…

So obviously it was a good choice.

defending jacobIn Defending Jacob, Assistant District Attorney Andy Barber is a pillar of the community.  He’s happily married to Laurie with a teenage son named Jacob.

Life is good.

Then one of his son’s classmates is murdered, and Jacob is the prime suspect.

Regardless of the mounting evidence, Andy’s belief in his son’s innocence cannot be shaken.  I found his blind faith at the same time completely believable and infuriating.

Andy and his wife come to realize they don’t know their son.  Laurie and Jacob don’t know everything about Andy, either.  It is an unpredictable and heartbreaking story…

Expertly told.

Like, cool

Have I mentioned lately how much I love the Internet?

Look at what I found, just by clicking around in that shopping mecca, Amazon.com.

What is it?

At first glance, I thought it looked like a really big gem…so maybe a funky jewelry box or safe?  Or maybe it’s some kind of light, although the lid seems contrary to that idea.

Need more time? Or are you ready for the answer?

It’s an ice cream ball — a newfangled ice cream maker that you don’t have to crank.  You just add ice and rock salt in one end, and ice cream mix in the other.  Screw the lid on, toss it around with your kids, friends or dog for 10-15 minutes, and voila — ice cream.

Well…that seems entirely too easy to me.

Scratch cooking of any kind should involve more skill, time and talent. (Heck, I had to hand crank ice cream when I was a kid.)

But who cares what they do — I just think they are cool looking!  I may just buy one anyway.

Now an even bigger problem — what color do I choose?

And will it look snazzy hanging around my neck?

140 barks or less

I have often joked that if my dog Rory had thumbs, he could rule the world.

Now it turns out he can tweet without ’em.

Puppy Tweets” — available in both blue and pink on Amazon.com — allow your dog to tweet his activities to a Twitter page that you set up for him (or her).

When your dog barks, moves or naps, the Puppy Tweets — which look like a dog tag — send a WiFi signal to your computer, which then sends one of over 500 pre-loaded Tweets to the Twitter page.

The Tweets put a ‘humorous spin’ on your dog’s activities while you are away from home.  One example:  a bark may generate a Tweet of: “I bark because I miss you. There I said it. Now hurry home.”

It’s a pretty cute idea.  And, if you get a lot of bark Tweets throughout the day, it’s helpful as well.  Now you really know if your dog is constantly barking and can do something about  it.  Or it confirms that your pet sleeps all day (like we all suspect).

Will dog owners buy this?  Oh yeah…if only for the the initial novelty.  I mean, I work from home, but I still wanna see if this thing is for real.

Plus, I’ve always suspected Rory is an early adopter.
