Perfect pair





I love you both.

How many matinees have I enjoyed with popcorn in one hand, Sweetarts in the other, and a large diet soda in the seat’s cup holder?

But, alas, that’s only memory now.

For some reason, you two have parted ways, and my favorite movie candy is no longer available at the AMC concession counter.

I have expressed my disappointment at the theatre. I have requested Sweetarts’ return in online surveys. But today —

I’m takin’ it to the tweets.

Monster advantage

Earlier today I got a “GODZILLA ALERT” via text message from AMC Theatres, making sure I was aware that the legendary lizard arrives tomorrow.

godzilla 2014From what I’ve read, this rendition of the mythical monster is the largest ever.

(Apparently Godzilla has gotten more ginormous with each creature feature.)

But he still can’t use a mobile phone or tablet.  So I clearly have the advantage in this situation.  I can get the heck out of Dodge, or run to the theatre and watch him wreck havoc on the folks who didn’t get advance warning.

Gotta join AMC Stubs, people.



AMC advancement

In December, I registered a complaint here and on Twitter about AMC Theatre’s brand new policy trailer.

amc theatresFeaturing their  ‘dot people,’ the short film has a bear eating cellphone dogs, and motorcyclists running over cattle.  It is weird and nonsensical (and obviously rather abusive to animals for no apparent reason).

A member of the AMC marketing department responded to my concerns on Twitter, which I appreciated.  And today I am happy to report  —

The policy trailer has been CHANGED!

The dot people are still the focus, but this time, two red balloons float from scene to scene, connecting the action.  It’s really very nice.  And no dot animals were harmed in the animation.

Tie it up with a bow

I have been an AMC Stubs member for three years.

During that time, I have spent $24 in membership fees. (The first year was free.) For that price, I have saved $274 on tickets, concessions and ticketing fees.

So yeah, it’s kinda worth it.

But look at what else AMC is going to give me — Carla, AMC Stubs member — when I go to see Mr. Peabody & Sherman in 3D!

I know this is intended to appeal to the kids in the audience, but clearly I have never grown up.

Giving credit where credit is due

We hear about bad customer service all the time.

I want to highlight some amazing treatment I received from Miranda, a live chat representative at Discover Card.

discover logoAs most of you probably know, I earn ‘cash back’ for using my Discover Card — a percentage of my monthly purchases.  I can take that cash back as money; use it to pay online purchases; or buy gift cards from partner retailers.

I am a movie junkie…so I buy AMC Theatre gift packs every time.

amc theatresFor $20, I get two movie passes and a $5 gift card for concessions.

In New York City, that’s a $40 value since our movies costs so much more.

It’s a great deal.

Recently I was using some of those $5 gift cards at my local AMC theatre concession stand, and they didn’t work. I tried one after the other…


I used the live chat feature at Discover.com and told Miranda my troubles.  When she found out that six of my $5 gift cards were sickly, she immediately sent me six complete AMC Movie Theatre gift packs.

That’s $120 worth of gift packets — $240 by NYC standards — for a mere $30 worth of bad cards for my inconvenience.  Now, that’s amazing customer service — above and beyond what I expected.

Movie pre-show peeve

I spend a lot of time — and money — in AMC Theatres.

So I see their pre-show policy trailer a lot. It’s morphed and changed of late, and not for the better.

Case in point: earlier this year AMC updated their brand. That’s when they debuted this policy trailer:

They must have quickly realized the glaring white background was hard on the eyes in a dark theatre, so in the summer they relaunched this version:

Personally, I’m not sure the color is the biggest problem. After the tragedy that occurred in the Colorado movie theatre, the dicey characters in trailer don’t make me harken back to iconic films…

They make me look around to see if any crazies are sitting close by.

Even more recently, AMC has added a more fully rendered version of the ‘dot people.’  (I couldn’t find it posted online.)  In this policy trailer, a bear ‘eats’ cellphone texters…and motorcyclists hit cattle on the information superhighway.  It’s all very symbolic, but clearly —

Someone at AMC isn’t an animal lover.

I miss the Inconsiderate Cellphone Man. Any chance of him coming back and rubbin’ out these dots?

After I returned home from the theatre last night, I shared my move review for The Way Way Back.

But I wasn’t quite ready to talk about the pre-show.

amc070713 While I was standing in line for a Diet Coke — and composing a Facebook status about how crazy crowded the theatre was for a Sunday evening — a man and his small child ran by me.  They were soon followed by a great crush of people. I heard words like ‘bomb’ and ‘fire.’

And then insanity broke out.

Everyone rushed for the exits.  AMC employees stood by, wide-eyed and searching.  Someone pulled the fire alarm.

I remember hesitating for an instance thinking, “Is this real?” and then not waiting to find out.

We all stood on the sidewalk — across from the theatre at the instruction of AMC employees who now had their orders.  Within seconds five fire trucks — five — surrounded the building.

And within minutes, it was over…and we were walking back inside.

Turns out two men got into an argument in one of the cinemas, and one pulled out pepper spray.   Someone standing close by panicked at the sight and smell of it.  And that’s all it took.

Because today, we are a nervous, twitchy society —

With movie trailers that are so long, I didn’t miss a single frame of the film.


During the pre-show at my local AMC theatre, an oft-run promo asks, “Do cell phones dream?” Personally, I want to know…

Do cell phone apps turn themselves on?

cell phone iconsNine times out of ten — when I swipe the screen on my Samsung Galaxy SIII — a random app is ready and waiting instead of the home screen that I expect.

Sometimes my camera is open and pointed at my face (which can be scary when you’re not ready for it).  Or the Seamless app is offering me restaurant choices to peruse.  More often than not, Fandango is open to their current movie push ad, which I quickly skip.

(And we all know it doesn’t take much for me to decide that going to the movie is a very good idea.)

What is making these apps pop open?  Is it something in the way I swipe?  Simple chance?  Or evil marketing genius at work?

The five dollar bet

Friends ask if I’ve seen the movie Lincoln. I haven’t.

It feels like homework.

But on this President’s Day holiday, I will celebrate the greatest president in our nation’s history by going to see Spielberg’s Oscar-nominated film.

A big thank you to AMC Theatres for having a $5 movie special in honor of the holiday.

(That might have tipped the scales a bit in the movie’s favor.)

Snow shuffle

It’s a blizzard out there.

So I did what the weather demanded — saw a triple feature at AMC Theatres: Warm Bodies, Identity Thief and Side Effects.

My favorite?

Hands down.  No competition.

Zombie movies normally aren’t my thing.  But this is no average run-of-the-mill zombie flick.

Sure, there are zombies shuffling about, covered in gore, on the lookout for brains to eat.

But Warm Bodies is a love story — how meeting one girl helps a zombie learn how to become human again.

It’s sweet and laugh-out-loud-funny — although not everyone in the theater today seemed to get it — and an obvious metaphor about society’s ills.  But what really killed me is that the oh-so-cute zombie I was jonesin’ over was portrayed by Nicholas Hoult, who played the little kid in About a Boy.
