Animal instincts

If you’ve spent any time on social media today, you may already know two great holidays have converged —

National Hug Day and Squirrel Appreciation Day.

If you’re like me, this accident of the calendar seems like a natural combination. I mean, what better way to show that cute little squirrel in your backyard or local park that you appreciate them than a big ol’ hug?

Then again, maybe not.

Dog days

Dear New Yorker merchandising department:

Please bring back your Dog Cartoons calendars.

I have bought these wall calendars for years. Last year, I couldn’t find that version, but I started shopping in January…so I blamed it on a lack of inventory.

Now I realize they weren’t made in 2012. And early shopping reveals they aren’t around for 2013 either.

This is not a good way to start the year, New Yorker.  I need my monthly dose of doggie humor.  Now, be a good boy and bring them back…okay?

I’ll give you a treat.

No plan here

Does your work week calendar look a bit like this?

Mine too.

How about your weekend?

I’m as guilty as the next person of jamming my work calendar with as much as I think I can reasonably — and sometimes not so reasonably — handle.

(I’m freelance.  The busier I am, the more I make.)

But when it comes to my weekends — or whatever days end up being free that week — I am hesitant to schedule too much.  I crave the lack of responsibility. The chance for solitude.

No deadlines or time schedules.

Spur-of-the-moment activities are always welcome.  But elaborate weekend plans?

That’s too much like work.

Name callin’

Did you know that if you Google the term ‘old maid,’ you get photos of Bette Davis?

That’s rather unexpected.

Apparently the screen legend was in a movie called The Old Maid in 1939.  (I feel better not remembering it.)

In the film, an ex-lover arrives on her wedding day and “sets in motion a chain of events which will alter her and her cousin’s lives forever.”

Hmmm…wonder who ends up being the old maid in this scenario?  I ask because according to the calendar, today is Old Maid’s Day.

That’s right.

I am tickled by the idea, the phrasing and now the discovery that there is a movie of the same name.  Might need to rent it to pay the proper homage to this oh-so-archaic of holidays.

But hey, if the shoe fits…

Speech, speech

It’s awards season.  And guess who won??

ME!

That’s right.  The Sticky Egg has won its second Versatile Blogger Award, courtesy of fellow blogger — and no doubt awesome human being — Hyperactive Inefficiency.

Thanks so much!

When I received my first nod last year from The Word Nymph, I didn’t pay it forward as is every winner’s prerogative.

Not this year.

Therefore, I hereby bestow The Versatile Blogger Award on the following blogs that I have recently discovered and find interesting and fresh:

  1. http://justachitowngirl.com/
  2. http://purecomplex.com/
  3. http://blackcrowwhiteowl.com/
  4. http://larasbookclub.wordpress.com/
  5. http://ratedyoung.com/

Congratulations!

And, in keeping with another awards rule, here are a few things about me that you might not know:

  1. I once had a dog named Booger.  And my best friend in college?  Had a dog named Booger.
  2. I was a member of the original Steve Martin Fan Club — arrow-through-the-head, certificate, you name it.
  3. I keep three calendars.
  4. I love buying purses but hate carrying them.
  5. I have a habit of living in cities for seven years, then moving.  (What’s that about?)

I’m also supposed to write a blog post about at least one of these facts in the near future, so stay tuned.

And thanks, as always, for reading The Egg!
