Edible art

I have discovered someone who is as big a fan of candy as I am.

Yes, it’s possible.

popsiclesDick Close, a graphic designer and illustrator from Cincinnati, had a booth at the Francisco’s Farm Arts Festival in Midway, Kentucky. The artist also enjoys watercolor, and his favorite subject matter is candy and popsicles.

I totally get that.

gummy bears

My favorite painting was of these three red gummy bears.

But I think you’ll find his entire portfolio is a sweet treat.

By the way, I did ask the artist if he eats the candy when he is finished painting. He said no.

He has talent and self-control that I will never know.

Hot dogs

This dog loves his fan almost as much as my pup.

After every warm-weather walk, Rory Dog lies down right in front of the small circular fan I have in the corner of the living room.  No standing or ear flapping for him;  we’re talking flat on his belly, legs splayed out behind him like a turkey prepped for stuffing.

flat roryOnce he cools off and starts to doze, he falls over on his side.  (Rolls is too gentle a word for his total collapse.)

Ya gotta love dogs — I certainly do love mine!

Decisions, decisions

Earlier this evening a friend on Facebook posted the challenge:  “Favorite three TV shows of all time”  —

Go.

At first glance, I thought it an easy question.  Then I noticed the comments were few in number; many people had only listed one or two shows instead of the requested three.

After spending some time on the topic, now I understand why.

west wingMy first favorite was immediate and top of mind: The West Wing.  From episode one until the the drama drew its last breath, I was one of its biggest fans and most vocal supporters.  It’s what television — and government, for that matter — should be.

Jed Bartlet is still my president.

cheersMy second choice is more of a sentimental favorite.  I wrote my television programming  paper on Cheers as a freshman in college and rightly predicted that it was a comedy that had long legs.

I also watched Cheers — perhaps not with the same religious fervor as West Wing — but until its end.  And it was way cool to eventually live just a few blocks from the Boston bar that served as its inspiration.

My third choice was the hardest one. I watch a lot of television, a lot of great television — House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Breaking Bad —
but I decided, if I was honest, I should choose the show that turned me into a schoolgirl fanatic:

I have the DVDs. And the hardback companion. And the bound scripts. And a couple of pictures on my office bulletin board.

Yeah, that probably qualifies as a favorite.

Cool breeze

Objects in this post are larger than they appear.

Take this fan, for instance.

It is a small lawn ornament in my brother Michael’s backyard.  It barely reaches knee-high and generates little more than a gentle breeze.

Today it was 103 degrees. My nephew’s rehearsal dinner was held outside tonight.  We could have used a big, yellow fan as big as that one looks.

Luckily, a cloud or two passed by and provided some much needed shade.

They were just the right size.
