Fried, not grilled

Everyone’s had a cheesy grin on their face today cause it’s National Grilled Cheese Day.

But some critics are accusing our fav sandwich of being a fraud.

It’s true — most folks cook grilled cheese sandwiches in a skillet, which technically makes it a fried cheese sandwich.

Is this supposed to make us feel bad? Or the ‘grilled’ cheese sandwich taste less amazing?

No and no.

As we say in the South, get over your fine self.

Cold comfort

Cheezeburger cheezeburger cheezeburger.

No thank you — I’m a grilled cheese kinda gal.

Always have been; just ask my family.  When we went to a diner and everyone else ordered burgers, I had the grilled cheese.  When we splurged at a really nice restaurant, I ordered — to my mother’s consternation — the grilled cheese.

Even now, when I check out a new restaurant and they have an interesting take on my cheesy favorite on the menu…it’s really hard for me to order anything else.

It is, quite simply, the perfect sandwich…a taste of home between two slices of bread.

And now a bartender in Victoria, British Columbia has attempted to capture the essence of the grilled cheese sandwich in a signature cocktail.

This could finally turn me on to liquor.

Shawn Soole hails from Brisbane, Australia, and his Cold Night In martini was inspired by a ‘toastie’ – the Australian term for a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup.

He combines “grilled cheese rum” — Mt. Gay’ washed’ overnight with a real-live grilled cheese sandwich — fresh-muddled tomato and basil, salt, Lillet Blanc and Glenfiddich Scotch whiskey.

I can’t tell a thing from the recipe…although the fact that he actually marinades his rum in a grilled cheese sandwich seems promising.  Plus, the martini is only served at Clive’s in Victoria, B.C.

Haven’t had a grilled cheese sandwich there yet…

Better than sliced bread

Tomorrow is a big day… a sadly overlooked and under-appreciated day.

And, for someone like me, whose idea of the perfect meal is a grilled cheese sandwich…or peanut butter and jelly…or ham and cheese on wheat with spicy brown mustard — tomorrow is a day of very special thanksgiving.

Tomorrow, November 3rd, is National Sandwich Day.

Let us bow out heads in a moment of silence.

How did I manage to work at Hallmark Cards for almost seven years and not discover this all-important holiday? Thanks to lemondrop.com, one of my favorite websites for all things weird and wonderful, I not only found out about National Sandwich Day in time to celebrate, I was also able to vote in their national poll for the Greatest Sandwich in America.

Is it my personal favorite, the grilled cheese?  Or the hearty PB&J?  The lobster roll?  Cheesesteak?  Or very sloppy joe?

I cast my vote, and I want you to have the honor as well.

I know our nation is currently debating important issues like national healthcare, potential troop deployment in Afghanistan, and whether or not the Yankees are indeed the demon seed they appear.  But having a voice in the selection of the Greatest Sandwich in America?

That hits home.  That hits the old tummy tum tum.

I’m hungry.
