Yes, please.

Cheesy

As many grilled cheese sandwiches as I have eaten in my life, I can’t understand why I don’t own these yet…

I must be a part of the club, right?

(Probably wouldn’t wear them…but it’s the principle of the thing — ya know?)

Silent messages from cheese central

I flew to Atlanta today.

After check-in at the hotel, I grabbed lunch at a nearby restaurant.  It had an extensive menu, but suddenly, I knew what I had to have —

Grilled cheese

When the waiter came back to the table, I pulled out my negotiation skills to get the sandwich, which oddly was not on the menu.  The nice man not only delivered a yummy grilled cheese — with fries — but gave it to me on the cheap.

Ya gotta love Southern hospitality.

Now, grilled cheese is my favorite sandwich, but I wondered why I had such a strong taste for it.  I later discovered that today is…

It’s like I heard the call of the curd…without even being aware of it.

We have that kind of relationship, cheese and I.

High cheese

I love grilled cheese sandwiches.  As I’ve mentioned here before, I have eaten them at pretty much every restaurant I’ve visited that offers one.

But would I want to walk a million miles on that same grilled cheese?  Not so much.

Well…maybe if it looked like this.

A fashion student from Bath Spa University in London designed these cheesy platforms in a competition sponsored by Pilgrim’s Choice to promote dairy farming in the region.

Lisa Dillon used West Country Cheddar and stale ‘heels’ of bread to sculpt the festive footwear, which will be on display at the Royal Bath and West Show, a county fair of sorts.

I personally hope that restaurants take note of Dillon’s creation.  Wouldn’t you love to order a grilled cheese or tuna melt or chicken salad, even..and see a sculpted sandwich like that arrive on your plate?

They could charge a whole lot more..and folks would pay, too.

Fancy sandwiches indeed!

No thank you — I’m a grilled cheese kinda gal.

Always have been; just ask my family.  When we went to a diner and everyone else ordered burgers, I had the grilled cheese.  When we splurged at a really nice restaurant, I ordered — to my mother’s consternation — the grilled cheese.

Even now, when I check out a new restaurant and they have an interesting take on my cheesy favorite on the menu…it’s really hard for me to order anything else.

It is, quite simply, the perfect sandwich…a taste of home between two slices of bread.

And now a bartender in Victoria, British Columbia has attempted to capture the essence of the grilled cheese sandwich in a signature cocktail.

This could finally turn me on to liquor.

Shawn Soole hails from Brisbane, Australia, and his Cold Night In martini was inspired by a ‘toastie’ – the Australian term for a grilled cheese sandwich and tomato soup.

He combines “grilled cheese rum” — Mt. Gay’ washed’ overnight with a real-live grilled cheese sandwich — fresh-muddled tomato and basil, salt, Lillet Blanc and Glenfiddich Scotch whiskey.

I can’t tell a thing from the recipe…although the fact that he actually marinades his rum in a grilled cheese sandwich seems promising.  Plus, the martini is only served at Clive’s in Victoria, B.C.

Haven’t had a grilled cheese sandwich there yet…
