Friday night my family hosted my nephew’s rehearsal dinner.
The main course? Turkey and pork barbecue.
Only much later did we realize that we’d let National Fried Chicken Day pass us by with nary a breast, thigh or drumstick in sight.
(Of chicken, folks — keep it clean.)
Now that our nephew is wed and already enjoying his honeymoon in Cozumel, we decided today to set things right…and gathered the family together for an honest-to-goodness Southern fried chicken dinner.
Plus all the fixin’s.
My favorite meal with my favorite people — what a perfect way to end the holiday weekend.

If you are sad that the holiday weekend is over, rest assured..it is not. Today is a holiday as well — National Neither Rain nor Snow Day.
Yeah, I thought it sounded made up, too, but it’s not. National Rain nor Snow Day celebrates the opening of the New York Post Office building on this date in 1914.
The building has the following inscription:
“Neither snow nor rain not heat nor gloom of night, stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.”
A lot of people — myself included — think of this as the United States Post Office motto, but it’s not; it was actually the motto of the Pony Express, which was never a government-funded operation.
I know…as holidays go, it’s not that exciting. Ask Kevin Costner; he did an entire movie on the topic — it was called “The Postman,” and nobody went to see it (except my brother Kent, who liked it a lot).
But I’m doing my best to extend your holiday weekend — to give you an excuse to stop your work and go home.
So, run! Be free! Find a horse and gallop off into the sunset!

Happy 4th of July, everyone!
You’re no doubt gathered with family and friends around a grill laden with burgers and hot dogs, enjoying a cold beverage and awaiting the start of your local fireworks display.
…or, at least, that’s what every image you see on television and in movies would have you believe.
But did you know that there are 155 television marathons planned for the 4th of July weekend alone? Fans of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Monk,” “The A Team,” and even “Silent Library” can watch episode after episode of their favorites over the next three days.
Do you think these marathons are planned for folks standing around the charcoal briquettes? “Gather the kids, Grandma — there’s 12 hours of ‘Ugly Betty,’ and the family wouldn’t want to miss it!”
I don’t think so.
The TV networks program marathons over the holidays because so many people don’t have that idealized, family scenario. They may just be hanging out, enjoying their free time…or they may be lonely as hell.
It’s just funny to think the folks who sell the idea of what the 4th of July holiday is all about also sell the substitute…
Just in case.

So, I’ve been sequestered inside a conference room all day, and what do I discover when I am finally released into the world?
- The voice of “Charlie’s Angels,” John Forsythe, has died.
- Olivia Newton-John’s long-lost-at-sea boyfriend is alive.
- “Two and a Half Men” is losing star Charlie Sheen.
- Dayton won the NIT, defeating North Carolina.
I guess that’s what I get for working on Good Friday.
With all this wackiness happening today, it makes me wonder what the holiday weekend has in store.
Saturday has the Final Four (Go Butler!), and Sunday the Easter Bunny (Go candy!).
Let’s see what leftover March Madness spills over into this first weekend of April.
