Love apple politics

Have you seen this week’s New Yorker cover?

Subtle, it is not.

But magazines are not the only things that are attempting to make a statement about the Anthony Weiner scandal — locally grown produce, for instance.

Dog days

Dear New Yorker merchandising department:

Please bring back your Dog Cartoons calendars.

I have bought these wall calendars for years. Last year, I couldn’t find that version, but I started shopping in January…so I blamed it on a lack of inventory.

Now I realize they weren’t made in 2012. And early shopping reveals they aren’t around for 2013 either.

This is not a good way to start the year, New Yorker.  I need my monthly dose of doggie humor.  Now, be a good boy and bring them back…okay?

I’ll give you a treat.

Save the date

The last day of 2011. Blogs are filled with the year in review, ‘best of’ lists, and previews of what’s to come.

Me? I’m just psyched about my new calendar.

We may be living in a digital world, carrying our lives around on our smartphones, but I still love selecting the wall calendar that hangs over the desk in my home office.

It used to be a no-brainer — the New Yorker dog cartoons calendar every year. And then they stopped making it two years ago.

So now I journey to Barnes & Noble, not knowing what calendar on the racks and spinners before me will catch my eye. But this year’s selection was an exciting combination of all the things I hold most dear:

Dogs. Movies. Celebrities. Kitch.

Yeah, that’s a cat. But he wasn’t dressed up for the photo. All the Jack Sparrow-ness was digitally added later.

There’s also Andy Warhol. And Austin Powers. Dame Edna. Mother Teresa.

Yep. It’s gonna be a good year.

Hat rack

I gotta new hat.

Cool, huh?

I bought it yesterday at the Penguin store in Soho.  I didn’t even know they a) were still around, b) sold clothes for men and women, and c) carried casual styles.  (In my mind, the Penguin brand — the one with the cute little sketchy penguin logo — had something to do with tuxedos.)

Live and learn.

But yesterday, while shopping with a friend who was visiting — and who knows a lot more about Penguin than I do — I bought that hat.

I love it first and foremost because it looks great with denim and black — 99 percent of every New Yorker’s wardrobe.  Secondly, it fits my large cranium. (Yes, I realize it’s a man’s hat.  But still.)

And last but not least, while wearing it around the city yesterday, it was just fun to be that chick —

The one in the hat…from the tuxedo store.
