The sporting life

Now that Wimbledon has ended, I am suffering from my annual melancholy.

wimbledon tennisWhat did I watch before it was on ESPN for two solid weeks?

What did I talk about?

What did I obsess about on social media?

Sigh.

Luckily, this year The Open begins this Thursday at St. Andrews in Scotland.

All the experts are picking 21-year old American Jordan Speith to win his third major of the year.

Yeah… I can totally obsess about that.

See for yourself

My blog, Facebook and Twitter feeds of late have been filled with praise for The Bridges of Madison County, which ended its too-short Broadway run this past Sunday.

I was fortunate enough to see the show twice, including its final performance.  But for those of you who were not able to attend — and perhaps have smiled indulgently at my near-obsessive behavior — I wanted to give you a taste of the quality performance I enjoyed.

Here’s Steven Pasquale performing “It All Fades Away” for the studio recording. (The note at 3:20 literally fills  your head during the live performance.)

He really is ruggedly handsome!

My sister and her husband stayed home last night — on a Friday night, no less — to watch the sci-fi classic Serenity starring Nathan Fillion.

It was a gift from me.

Castle Captain Mal

Not the movie itself — I’m sure they caught the film on Netflix or Hulu. No, their fascination with ‘all things Fillion’ started during their Christmas vacation with me here in New York City.

I took them to a Broadway show. To Jazz at Lincoln Center. To movies and restaurants and shops. Santa even visited my apartment.

But the gift that has continued to ‘keep on giving?’  An impromptu Castle marathon on the last day of their trip, when we all agreed that lying on the couch sounded like fun.

The day Lou and Chuck discovered the charms of Nathan Fillion.

Now they are catching up on episodes of Castle and learning all about his past as Captain Mal in Firefly and Serenity.

I love to watch an obsession come together!

Be heard

If you’ve read The Sticky Egg with any regularity, you’ve got a strong stomach…and you’ve also probably noticed my girlie crush — veering on obsession — with Craig Ferguson, host of The Late Late Show on CBS.

What can I say?  He moves me.

On last night’s program, Craig opened the show by discussing his latest quandary:

Should he put the earring back in his left ear?

Craig removed the jewel when he started hosting the show six years ago, and had planned to start wearing it again when he turned 60.  Apparently yesterday morning he felt 60, so he popped it in…but then just as quickly took it back out.  He didn’t think it looked right.

Personally, I’ve always thought an earring on a man in a suit looks a bit out of place.  If a guy is going to wear an earring, it seems like his entire wardrobe should be a bit more casual.   So, if Craig were to start wearing his earring again, I would think his on-screen clothing would need to be reevaluated.

But that’s just me.

What do you think?  Vote in my online poll below, and I’ll share the results with Craig’s producers, who I’m sure will react accordingly.

(Oh yes…they read The Egg.)
