One man’s nap ..

The New York City Marathon is being run today…

…and broadcast for five hours on ABC7.

And people make fun of me for watching golf on television.

See this

Last night Julianne Moore won a SAG Award for her work in Still Alice.

still aliceI saw the movie on Sunday, so I know why.

Her portrayal of a 50-year old Columbia University professor with early on-set Alzheimer’s is amazing…because you can’t see what she’s doing.

She simply has Alzheimer’s.

And everyone around her in the movie looks like they’re acting.

In the movie scene represented by the still above, Julianne’s character is out running in her New York City neighborhood, and is suddenly lost.  She starts to hyperventilate, and everything becomes an unrecognizable blur. The audience is in there with her.

It’s really scary.

I won’t pretend this movie is easy to watch, but I think it’s important to see.

How sweet it is!

Living a block from Central Park in Manhattan, I’ve been known to get a bit grouchy come Saturday morning when yet another group of runners clog the streets and walkways and generally disrupt my morning walk.

Don’t they know we dog people own the park?

But today there was a run that even I can get behind —

cupcakesThe New York City Cupcake Run

This 5 kilometer (3.1 mile) race for people of all ages challenges participants to go the distance while stopping to eat three cupcakes at checkpoints along the course.  Tasty!

Plus, a portion of the proceeds benefits New York Cares.

And if that isn’t reason enough to love this non-traditional charity event, here’s one of my favorites —

It’s run in Astoria.

Grounded

On an average day, New Yorkers like myself (non-car owners) are very earth-friendly as we run to work or do our errands around the neighborhood.

You will see us:

Or possibly:

Or, if our knees can handle it:

Even the subway is a very green choice (although there are things you need to know):

(Thanks, Nathan.)

Happy Earth Day everybody!

I like shirts

Just because it’s legal, you don’t have to do it.

This credo was painfully shoved into my eyeballs this morning.

Rory and I were walking home from Central Park when a runner — a man — walked past us, shirt off, sweaty, obviously in the cool down portion of his workout.

Boy With Hand Over EyesTragically, ‘shirt off’ was not his best look.

This guy made me look tan.  He was blotchy and had — mosquito bites, maybe? — all over his back.  Although he was working out, his physique was not ready for prime time. But everyone out on the streets was being treated to the display. Without choice. Without mental preparation.

I mean, what if I had eaten?

In New York State, woman can also legally walk outside without their top on, but…

Just because it’s legal, they don’t have to do it.

Spreading the word

Our thoughts are with you.

Thrill seeker

What do you do when you’re bored?

I read.  Go to the movies or a show.  Often just hop online.

Clearly that wouldn’t work for this guy.

Kudos to him for raising money for charity!
