It delivers

More than a few critics included the thriller It Follows on their year’s best list…some saying it was one of the great scary films of all time.

Even with that ringing endorsement,  I waited to watch the film until it was free on cable, and on early enough that I could shake off any creepiness long before bedtime.

Hey,  I live alone.

I like the fact that it began in the middle – –  no long exposition,  so you are spooked from the start.  There are plenty of reasons to jump and scream,  but no gore which I personally appreciate. And the movie doesn’t tie everything up with a bow at the end, which increases the spook factor.

Is it the scariest movie I have ever seen?  No.  But it’s a good ‘un.

Don’t sit down

During the month of October, we see a lot of scary things on TV, in movies, on ads in every walk of life — all because Halloween is coming.

But with the exception of The Town that Dreaded Sundown, I don’t think I have seen anything as scary as the couch at this hotel.

Actually, the photo makes it look kinda vintage. It’s not.

It’s a HORROR.

Funny bunny

I don’t remember ever posing with the Easter Bunny as a child, so I’ve never thought about how they might look.

Scary or cute?

Definitely scary.

Hold fast to your kiddies,  parents.

Creature feature

I have a home office, and often keep the TV on for a little background noise in the apartment.

This afternoon I am working on the couch in front of the TV.  The sound is down low, so it’s more of a pleasant hum than a distraction.

But then this image filled the screen during a commercial break —

natalie portman black swan

Geez oh pete, HBO…don’t throw around the Black Swan willy-nilly.

That’s some seriously scary shit.

Happy?

What does happiness look like?

McDonald’s says this:

He’s the new mascot for their Happy Meal.

New to the States, I should say. He’s been repping the kid’s menu in France since 2009, and Latin America and Europe since.

I think he looks a bit like the Kool-Aid mascot who crashed through walls when I was a youngun. But many online  find the meal mascot a bit scary…and are creating memes to prove their point.

Yeah, I feel you.

The frighteners

I just watched the series finale of American Horror Story: Coven.

AHS Coven

I won’t include any spoilers here — for those of you who are even farther behind than I — but I will say that Coven was my least favorite of the three AHS mini-series to date.

Here’s why:

  1. It wasn’t scary enough.  Murder House and Asylum were hide-your-eyes-put-the-kids-to-bed television events.  MH was especially chilling with its basement of horrors, leather-bound mystery man and shadows darting in front of the camera without explanation.  The only thing scary about Coven were the teaser promos; the series itself was more spectacle than horror.
  2. There weren’t enough men. It’s wonderful to see all these powerful female roles, especially for actresses of a certain age. But does that conversely mean that there’s room for so few men in the story line?  MH and Asylum had strong characters of both sexes; Coven suffered from its narrow definition of witch.
  3. The finale (no spoilers) seemed a bit…familiar. I’m pretty sure that same actress was in a very similar situation at the end of Asylum.  Would be great to mix things up (including the players) in Seasons 4 and 5.

TV critics have been quick to call Coven the best season of American Horror Story based on the higher ratings alone.  But we know how long it can take audiences to find a series.  So if you are new to AHS this season, take a swing by Netflix and watch Seasons 1 and 2.

They’re so good, it’s scary.
