Solutions for a small planet

Admit it — most of us don’t read the manual that comes with our new smart phones cover-to-cover.

Maybe not at all.

So it’s not surprising that articles like “21 Things You Didn’t Know Your iPhone Could Do” literally amaze.

However, I would like to add a feature to that list that applies to any brand of mobile phone.  It crosses platforms, versions, price points — you name it.  And in New York City, it has proven extremely valuable on a daily basis.

Got a mobile phone at your ear?  Appear to be in a conversation?  They leave you alone.

World peace.  It’s what every beauty pageant contestant wants.

Water, water everywhere

It is a frequent (and very sad) Facebook status:

“I’ve dropped my cellphone in water. Email me until I get it replaced.”

watery phoneThis hasn’t happened to me yet. But as recently as last month, I heard similar tales from family and friends. And I am always sympathetic (to keep karma on my side).

Today I offer a possible solution.

It’s called DryBox Rescue, a service offered by authorized dealers around the country.  Your soggy cellphone is placed in a patent-pending drying chamber.  The moisture is then removed —  at the molecular level — in less than 30 minutes.

It also works on other small electronic devices that are drawn to the toilet and sink —  mp3 players, cameras, GPS units, etc.

Full disclosure:  I’ve never used this service; I’ve just read about it in an airline magazine.  But it sounds like a much better option than 1) rice or 2) throwing away your pricey smart phone.

So, give it a look.  Other than the rather unfortunate name, I think it shows promise.

Geek love

In high school we knew — someday we’d have our revenge.

(They even made a movie about it.)

Now we rule the world.  Nerds and geeks created your computer and your smart phone and your mpg player and Facebook and Twitter and all the technology that today, you can’t live without.

It’s even cool to be a geek.  Geeks are sexy.  Geeks are reluctant spies like “Chuck” or good-looking renegade space captains like Mal Reynolds in “Firefly” or scientists taking their geekness to new levels like Sheldon on “Big Bang Theory.”

And geek fans?  They’re the coolest by far.  Everybody wants them — movies, television shows, cartoons, comic books — you name it.  They are the most sought after population on the planet…or so it would appear this week.

Comic Con, the comic book conference that up until a few years ago people only attended under fake names or the cover of darkness, is now the biggest show on the planet.  Major celebrities are in San Diego as we speak promoting their new movie, TV show, or animated series…and I think they still do comic books, too.

It’s insane.  I am so jealous that I’m not there….

With my people.

Someone…get me a t-shirt?
