Bloodline post-binge

I finished watching the 13th and final episode of season one of Bloodline, the new drama from Netflix, who just keeps churning out these excellent shows.

I thought this might be a one-and-done, but they recently announced the show will be back for season two.

That explains a couple of things about the finale…which I won’t mention here.

I want you to watch it, of course, if you aren’t already. And here’s why.

  1. Ben Mendelsohn  — Apparently he is a leading actor in his native Australia, but even as much as I watch movies and TV, his face was new to me.  He is brilliant. Really. He quietly steals every scene on the strength of his character work alone.
  2. Water Torture — The show may take place at a hotel on the Florida Keys, but the layers of mystery that surround the family members are doled out in excruciatingly slow drips. And I love it. When you’re used to movie trailers giving away the entire film in less than two minutes, it’s nice to have a genuine surprise in every episode. This pacing fits the leisurely vacation location, too.
  3. Game of Thrones — Characters drop right and left; that’s why I thought the show was over in one season. The second year is going to be interesting, but I have faith in the strong–albeit bloodied–cast that remains.

So, add it to your Netflix queue.  You will thank me!

One blonde, two blonde

the other womanI was ready for something light and uncomplicated at the movies this weekend, so Cameron Diaz’s new film “The Other Woman” seemed like a good fit.

A revenge fantasy, three women — the wife, the girlfriend who didn’t know he was married, and the gullible mistress — join forces to take their pound of flesh from the man who wronged them all.

Is it plausible? No. But the cast sells it, and I laughed more than I thought I would.

However, if you want to see a funnier Cameron Diaz movie that was also released this weekend OnDemand, check out Gambit.

gambit-posterThis comedy has pedigree:  The Coen Brothers as screenwriters.  A cast that includes Diaz (playing an over-the-top Texas rodeo gal), Colin Firth, Alan Rickman and Stanley Tucci.  And an art heist at its center with enough misdirections and surprises to keep you guessing until the final frame.

Plus, Alan Rickman is creatively nude.

(Perhaps I should have led with that tidbit.)

No surprise

I watched the entire Oscars telecast last night, so I am sleepy today, but not because I was up late —

Because it was so BORING.

Where were the surprise winners? The endearing, incomprehensible speeches from dumbfounded winners? And no, I don’t count the garbled speech of presenters — like John Travolta and Harrison Ford — who can’t read a teleprompter.

I don’t watch awards shows to see actors deliver their lines. (That’s why I go to the movies.) I want some spontaneity. Some mistakes. Some signs of life and humanity.

Thank goodness Benedict Cumberbatch and I had some fun on the red carpet before the big snoozefest began.

Comedy con

I saw American Hustle tonight.

The movie and all its stars completely deserve all the Golden Globe nominations they racked up.

But my favorite thing about the film is an actor who does not appear in any of the trailers or talk show promotion.  A few of the reviews did spill the beans — so don’t read them before you go — because his performance is such a wonderful surprise!

Okay, I’ll give you a little hint:  he is a funny man who plays the most incredible straight man in the movie.  I loved every minute!

Go see it.  And you’ll know immediately who I’m talking about…

No con here.

The best laid plans

It was the 50th birthday party that didn’t happen.

Well, not as planned.

I flew to Cincinnati today to attend a surprise party for my best friend from college.  Her family had gone all out, and she was totally in the dark.

Then the weather dumped its own surprise on us — ice and snow that made the roads too dangerous.

So we had to reschedule the party for Saturday and let her in on it.

Poop.

A smaller group of us ended up at her next door neighbors house tonight for an impromptu dinner, which was loads of fun…so really, she is getting TWO parties.

Surprise!!
