America’s Greatest Innovation

What is America’s greatest innovation?

John Hockenberry, host of The Takeaway on WNYC Radio here in Manhattan, has that question up for a vote.

There are nine candidates vying for the title, and it’s far harder than I expected.

How do you choose between the mobile phone and the hearing aid?  The sewing machine and air conditioning?

GPS and the electric guitar?

Review all the candidates, and then cast your ballot here.

If you’ve ever had the good fortune to travel to Ireland, you might assume (incorrectly) that people who live amongst such rustic countryside and rich history wouldn’t be very forward-thinking.

Turns out they have quite a few things to teach us back here in the USA.

Congratulations, Emerald Isle, on your historic approval of same-sex marriage — the first country to do so by a national vote.

You can, too.

Stamps are funny

Although I might not have agreed with who got what award at this week’s Emmys, it was, as always, amazing to see so many truly funny people gathered in one room.

Even the nominees in the Drama categories are pretty darn hilarious when they let go.

So when I saw the news today that Canada has issued stamps with the name and likeness of five of their great comedians, I had two immediate reactions:

  1. Good for them.  Well-deserved all.
  2. Why haven’t we done something similar here in in the USA, the home of comedy?

Turns out the US Postal Service did do something similar back in 1991 — a booklet of stamps honoring the comedy greats of days gone by.

When I saw these stamps, I had two immediate reactions:

  1. Good for them.  Well-deserved all.
  2. Why haven’t we done something similar for the current generation of comedians and comediennes?

Do you see a pattern?  More importantly, do you agree?

Raise your hand

THIS JUST IN —

The models on The Price Is Right and Let’s Make a Deal strike distinctively different poses with prizes!

It’s true.

price is right model poseExhibit A:  Rachel, The Price is Right

Note the ‘broken arm’ approach, open palm, hand on hip.

I think we all agree this is the traditional way to ‘Vanna’ an item.

lets make a deal model poseExhibit B:  Tiffany, Let’s Make a Deal

While Tiffany also balances her approach with the hand on hip, she elects to use a straight arm technique topped by a twisted, closed hand.

As you can see, this stance is effective both standing still or while walking across the stage as seen at left.

Which model pose do you prefer?  Game show models want to know!
