Flavorless

Only a few US states have official snacks.

South Carolina has boiled peanuts. Texas chose chips and salsa. Lucky Illinois has popcorn and Utah has Jell-O.

yogurtYesterday Governor Andrew Cuomo named the official snack for New York as…

YOGURT

Now, I know that New York produces a lot of dairy products, and that yogurt is a healthy snack choice.

But that is the most depressing official state snack ever.

New York isn’t smooth and creamy and vanilla and boring.  We’re every color of the rainbow and loud and crunchy.  You’d probably break a tooth on a snack that really represented our state.

Yogurt?  I mean, seriously…that’s embarrassing.

I may have to move.

A matter of taste

ChaCha.com recently put together a list of some of the most unique fast foods available around the globe.

spam and egg sandwichThis was of particular interest to me because a couple of their choices were from Japan:  McDonald’s Ebi-Fillet — that’s shrimp — and Burger King’s Spam and Egg Sandwich (pictured on the left).

I’m proud to say I didn’t frequent any fast food restaurants during my stay, so I didn’t notice these options.

What did strike me as slightly odd was the traditional breakfast in Japan:

ricesaladgreen tea

White rice. A green salad. A thin, bland yogurt. And green tea.

Now, I might eat this for lunch if my main meal was delivered to the wrong table, but it’s not the flavor profile that I crave for breakfast. But my hotel offered it, and I ate it.  When in Rome…

(I did break down and add sweetener to the tea.  And to their credit, the natives didn’t wince too hard when I did.)

Call me curdled

Yummy? Creamy? Better-tasting?

Sorry, Greek yogurt, I ain’t buying it.

greek-yogurt-masterOh, I’ve tried your wares — different brands, different fruit-and-yogurt combos, too — and it’s true you don’t taste like other yogurts…

You taste like sour cream.

And I wouldn’t choose to eat anything that has turned for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

I did add the fruit. Didn’t help. I added sweetener, too…and then wondered why I was going to all that trouble when I can simply eat Activia when I have a hankering for yogurt.

It already tastes good.

john-stamos-superbowl-commercialI’ll admit, John Stamos is a very appealing spokesperson for Greek yogurt, but he doesn’t deliver, either —

When I bought his brand, he was nowhere to be seen.

Maybe that accounts for the bad taste in my mouth.

The whey

My dog Rory has had some digestive issues this past week, and a friend recommended adding a dollop of yogurt to his food.

Probiotics, don’t you know — the ‘friendly bacteria’ that Jamie Lee Curtis gets all giggly about.

But my dog is a picky little shit.  You change his food one iota, and he won’t touch it…which makes any change in his diet a real pain in the probiotic.

There are some animals, though, who are real fans of the yogurt cure.

Maybe Rory will listen to the bird.
